Following the successful initial series from the Netherlands’ first Massive Open Online Course (MOOC) last February, the University of Amsterdam (UvA) has now formed a partnership with Coursera, an international online education platform.

Graduate School of Communication

On Wednesday, 4 September, President of the UvA Executive Board Louise Gunning and Coursera CEO Daphne Koller concluded an official agreement. The UvA MOOC in Communication Science, scheduled to start on Thursday, 12 September, will also be offered by Coursera as of January.

‘Online education is an excellent supplement to the regular programme’, explains Louise Gunning. ‘This partnership with Coursera will enable a large international audience to become acquainted with the education offered by the UvA.’

At the moment, more than 4.6 million people use Coursera, where they are able to choose from 435 courses offered by various universities such as Princeton, Stanford and Yale.

The first MOOC ‘Introduction to Communication Science’ at the UvA (also the first MOOC in Communication Science in the world), which started last February, attracted global interest: over 5,000 participants took the online course, 30% of whom were from abroad. The MOOC Introduction to Communication Science is scheduled to start again on Thursday, 12 September. The free online English-language course lasts 8 weeks and provides short video clips on all aspects of communication, from history and theory to the influence of the media on society. The participants receive weekly assignments and take an exam at the end of the course. If they pass, participants receive a certificate of participation. The MOOC is an initiative of the UvA’s College of Communication and Graduate School of Communication.
