13 June 2016

On Saturday, 11 June, Prof. Patti Valkenburg, University Professor of Media, Youth and Society at the University of Amsterdam was honoured with the 2016 Steven H. Chaffee Career Achievement Award.

This prize is awarded annually by the International Communication Association (ICA) to a scholar who has carried out pioneering research in the field of communication studies for an extended period.

The jury praises Valkenburg for the impact her extensive and innovative research has had and still has on all areas of communication science, and especially those relating to Youth and Media. Valkenburg was one of the first communication science scholars to combine theories from different disciplines and come up with a model that explains how and why individuals differ in their susceptibility for media effects. Valkenburg is the founder of the Center for Research on Children, Adolescents and the Media (CcaM) at the UvA. She has published over 160 articles, 6 books and 40 book chapters and is one of the most cited communication scientists in Europe and the rest of the world.
